Portland Harbour was the centre for the Sailing in the 2012 Olympics for the reason that it is one of the best areas in the world to sail. In this area we are passionate about our sailing and there are many ways to get on the water. WPNSA (Sailing Academy) offers tuition via Sail Laser. Castle Cove Sailing Club also has RYA level training and is a very friendly family sailing club which welcomes visitors from all over the world.
There are a number of public slipways around both Weymouth and Portland harbours if you wish to launch your own craft or boats can be chartered. Again Portland Harbour hosted the Olympic windsurfing and is a brilliant place to windsurf for all levels of experience. Tuition can be booked through the windsurfing centre at the Sailing Academy
The Paracademy is situated just off Victoria Square close to Portland Harbour, they will guide you from the first time you fly the kite to becoming airborne over the harbour – a stunning sight for all.
Portland Harbour and the surrounding area is a world renowned area for diving. There is an abundance of sea life, crystal clear and clean waters, wrecks and dives to suit all abilities. There are several centres in the area Fathom & Blues being based at the Osprey Leisure Centre in Castletown
Kitesurfing is becoming increasingly popular on Portland
An excellent area for fishing whether by boat or from the coast. It is possible to catch a wide variety of fish including Pollock, Mackerel, Bass, Wrasse, Sole and even the occasional Cod. Crab, scallops and Lobster are in abundance in Portland Harbour and there is an Oyster Farm in the Fleet. Sea Fishing can be arranged with the highly recommended Tony King who can provide all the kit and instruction.

Portland is one of the best places in the UK for bird watching for both sea and land birds. The best place to start is the Portland Bird Observatory housed in the lighthouse close to Portland Bill.
With over 1000 routes you will always have somewhere new to explore
Portland has 1000 different climbing routes suitable for all levels of experience. Climbing the sea cliffs gives you a sense of drama with fantastic sea views. There are specialist websites which will help you decide where to go on the island.
Portland is an excellent place to walk, there is a coastal path which will take you all around the island taking in the stunning views of the coastline. There are many circular, shorter routes taking in a stop at a cafe or local hostelry. Everywhere you can see the relics of Portland’s past industry alongside working quarries and stone sculptures. Wildlife is in abundance and if you want to get closer to some animals, a trip to Fancy’s Family Farm is recommended.
